[ARCHIVED] Oregon Avenue Speed Limit Lowered

During the week of September 29, City crews will be installing 40mph speed limit signs along Oregon Avenue/SR397 between I-182 and Ainsworth Street. This new limit is a drop from the current limit of 45mph, and was previously approved by the Pasco City Council and the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The new lower limit is just one of the action items from the City’s Oregon Avenue Corridor Study to help improve safety and traffic in the area. The existing roadway has two travel lanes in each direction and is bound by both developed and vacant properties on both sides. Sixteen public street intersections and two at-grade railroad crossings are located within the corridor, which carries a higher percentage of trucks than the rest of the City, and there have been a large number of recorded accidents in past years, including a number of fatal accidents.

The City is planning to widen the existing four-lane roadway to provide a five-lane section that offers a center turn lane to accommodate turns. The City anticipates that vacant properties along the corridor will be developed to host additional industrial businesses in the future and seeks corridor improvements in a manner that safely and efficiently facilitates business traffic.
